The Open Doors- History

The Camrose Open Door Association, operationally known as The Open Doors, was founded in 1998 to address gaps in services for at-risk youth in Camrose. What began as an outreach initiative by the Camrose Church of God quickly evolved into an independent non-profit organization dedicated to supporting homeless and vulnerable youth. In its early years, The Open Doors focused on outreach and emergency shelter services, identifying over 40 homeless or couch-surfing youth in its first few months of operation.

The organization incorporated as a non-profit society in 1999 and expanded its services to include counselling in 2000. Over the next decade, The Open Doors continued to grow and develop new programs to meet the changing needs of Camrose youth. In 2004, the Positive Personal Futures (PPF) skills development program was launched. A significant milestone was reached in 2006 when The Open Doors purchased and renovated the Gateway Centre building, providing a permanent home for its expanding services.

In 2008, The Open Doors began providing supportive housing services, further expanding its ability to assist vulnerable youth. The following year saw the opening of Café Connections, a social enterprise initiative that provides job training and employment opportunities for youth. In 2012, The Open Doors expanded its housing services by acquiring the Gardner College campus. In 2013, The Open Door’s commitment to quality services was recognized when it received a 3-year accreditation from the Canadian Accreditation Council.

Throughout its history, The Open Doors has relied on partnerships with government agencies, community organizations, and generous donors to support its work. The organization has continuously evolved its services, which now include outreach, counselling, justice support programs, mental health supports, navigation services, life skills training, and employment supports among others.

As The Open Doors looks to the future, it remains committed to its vision of empowering individuals to reach their full potential. The organization has expanded its services to include adults and families, and has extended its reach beyond Camrose to serve East Central Alberta. This expansion reflects The Open Door’s dedication to meeting the diverse needs of the broader community and its commitment to making a positive impact across the region.

“I have no idea where I’d be if it wasn’t for The Open Doors. For all I know someone could have pulled me out of a ditch, but instead I am close to graduating and getting a job.”
